American IPAs

Ok, we're back! This episode is one of my favorites! We dig into some slightly implausible IPA history, taste a series of delicious brews, and get really silly. This may be the only combo Gremlins 2 fancast/Beer podcast in history. Not only that, we tell the San Diego zoo to go to hell, argue about beer names like "Raging Bitch" (again) and send racists to the Twilight Zone. Give it a listen!

Get your somewhat sour on! It's Professional beer nerd! The return! We're back, with an episode on Flemish reds.  I'm Brendan, and I'm joined by my friends Tim and Brad, as we try this unique style of sour beer. It's been a while since our last episode, but we're coming back, with two episodes a month in the foreseeable future!

The F Plus Podcast takes on

The F plus was a podcast I got into after following the Earwolf Challenge (a reality podcast about judging other podcasts. I like podcasts, ok???). Their hook is that they find things on the internet that are ridiculously horrible, or horribly ridiculous, and read and comment on them. Normally, they do alot of fan fiction and weird, pervy stuff that they find deep within the bowels of the internet, but one week, they found

If you attempt to write on beer or wine, this is an alarming, and apparently COMPLETELY UNINTENTIONAL parody. I found it hilarious, and more than a little embarrassing, since water nerds don't sound all that different from me when I get going. Water nerds. It's a new low. Check out some of the essays on the website, or the reviews, when you get the chance. You should also check out the F plus...fair warning! They can get pretty gross on some episodes! They're really funny though. Go on, you're not hurting anyone!

America and the History of Pumpkin Beer

America and the History of Pumpkin Beer

An interesting look at the history of a style, that like many great beers, was born out of necessity. This 1643 American folk song is an awesome bit of the history of a people so thirsty that they would ferment anything.

Instead of pottage and puddings and custards and pies,
Our pumpkins and parsnips are common supplies;
We have pumpkin at morning and pumpkin at noon;
If it was not for pumpkins we should be undone
… Hey down, down, hey down derry down….
If barley be wanting to make into malt
We must be contented and think it no fault
For we can make liquor, to sweeten our lips,
Of pumpkins and parsnips and walnut-tree chips.

We're recording our Pumpkin beer special on Sunday! While no beers with parsnips and walnut tree chips has been submitted, we should have a wealth of pumpkinny options. Let us know if you have a favorite we should try. I (Brendan) don't actually really like the style, but Brad and Tim are hellbent on convincing me!

Let's talk about beer!

Hey Nerds

Check out this article I wrote on my awesome wife's blog a couple months ago. It's head and shoulders over any of the stuff I've posted here! Someday I'll actually write a follow up, though for me, I think podcasting, and the ability to just jabber on, is more in my wheelhouse than actually composed script. Let me know what you think, and check out Natasha's blog while you're at it!

Love you!

Notes from a Monday night.

Hey, if you were trapped on a desert island, what beer would you bring? How fast would you have to drink it before you were rent in twain by the indigenous life? Only a fool would waste their time bringing heavy, breakable beer bottles with them when you can create a fermentable stew with spit and tropical fruits.

I think if we've learned any lessons here, it's that Islands are awful, even really big ones, like Australia. Forget you Australia. We've also learned that trying to focus every blog post around beer sometimes results in tortured cliches. I hope you're happy, go drink your dumb island rotgut and leave me alone.

New Episode is up! This is our drunkest podcast yet. We're tasting a couple extreme beers, Dragons Milk and Hopsolutely. We also take on a lot of non beer topics-- milk producing birds, desert island drinking, tee-totalling wizards, and a really weird take on parades. Oktoberfest will be up next week, so I have plenty of time to distill it down into it's funniest essence. Thems are the breaks.
